Every time an email announcing a new brand of $300 leggings lands with a thud in my inbox, I wonder how much longer upscale athleisure can captivate us. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for 24/7 comfort and ease, but when a new brand of overpriced jeggings rears its head, I feel like ARGH!

Activewear or the ‘Athleisure’ trend has become so popular, it has carved out a niche for itself in the clothing industry, and has won an entry into the Merriam-Webster dictionary, which defines it as “casual clothing meant to be worn both for exercising and for general use.”

One of the reasons for the massive popularity of the athleisure trend is that it filled a gap in the marketplace, where clothing that was functional wasn’t particularly stylish. Such clothing can be worn to the gym, as well as everywhere else. Sounds good, right? Yes, it does.

To be honest, I don’t think it’s a fad. Especially since every major brand is coming out some collection which features “sporty looks”, there is a market for sure. Now whether we are ready to embrace this trend wholeheartedly, is another matter.

What do you think? Is the athleisure trend here to stay?
